Group Therapy Training Program
Diversity Statement
The Group Therapy Training Program (GTTP) emphasizes the integration of inclusivity into group psychotherapy and is committed to diversity, broadly defined, in teaching, practice, and service.
We have learned from our work with Alexis Abernethy, PhD, in addtion to our own experience, that fostering a climate of curiosity about difference and seeking to understand each person’s story increases intimacy in that we more closely understand each individual’s unique experience. The GTTP is in agreement with TPI’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity, and we aim to incorporate the integration of psychological and sociocultural perspectives into all aspects of the program.
It is our understanding that embodying diversity means attending to the shared and unique experiences of each individual with regard to race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, spiritual orientation, class, health concerns, and people with disabilities, as well as factors including, but not limited to, local and global economic dynamics, present and historical contexts of power dynamics, institutional and other forms of oppression, and access to resources. In addition, as part of our commitment to inclusivity and diversity, we are dedicated to recognizing and exploring the reality and impact of dominant cultural privileges.
