Training Programs
The Psychotherapy Institute hosts three training programs to support therapists at all stages of their development: the Psychotherapy Training Program, the Supervision Training Program, and the Group Therapy Training Program. Our programs support practicum students and therapists just out of graduate school who want in-depth training in psychodynamic work and the opportunity to gain hours toward licensure as well as seasoned therapists who want to hone their skills in supervision or leading therapy groups. Our training programs offer the opportunity to be mentored by experienced clinicians.
Psychotherapy Training Program
The Psychotherapy Training Program provides an intensive learning experience in psychodynamically oriented psychotherapy. It is open to members of the professional community who have attained a master's or doctoral degree in psychology, social work, counseling, or a related mental health field and want to deepen their skills and knowledge. Trainees staff the Institute’s moderate-fee Community Clinic and provide psychotherapy to clients under the careful supervision of experienced, licensed clinicians. They receive both individual and group supervision weekly and participate in a didactic program of lectures, seminars, and case conferences covering major theoretical and clinical aspects of psychotherapy. Group Therapy Training Program
The Group Therapy Training Program (GTTP) is a one-year training program offering an in-depth study of the theory and practice of group therapy facilitation. The faculty includes senior group therapists and experts in group psychotherapy from TPI and the larger community. Read more >>

Supervision Training Program
Since 1986, TPI has offered a one-year program in the theory and practice of supervision. The Supervision Training Program is one of the oldest such programs in the nation, it is the only one of its kind in the Bay Area. The program combines readings and didactic instruction with a practicum that includes weekly individual and small-group consultation. Participants enrolled in the program may provide supervision to trainees in TPI's psychodynamic training program, as well as to licensed therapists in the community through TPI’s professional consultation service.
