Presidential Address

From Kyra Peyton, TPI President

Remember TPI this holiday season:

Make your pledge to TPI’s Annual Fund Today!

Dear Friends,

We are making numerous strides in our continuing efforts to recover from the pandemic. There is definitely a lot of good news to share: Our new staff has been enculturated into the culture of TPI. Our training programs are running smoothly. Our building’s interior has been renovated. Our TPI board and committees have been revitalized with new leadership. The income generated by our programs has increased over last year. Our Membership and Development have reported significant success in securing grants from dedicated and generous funding partners.

With all this progress, our Institute finances continue to be fragile. Last year, our Annual Fund campaign raised $50,000 to support our Training Programs and Community Clinic. This year, we need your help to meet or exceed last year’s fundraising goal. We are counting on you to be able to offer our programs and to secure the Institute’s future.

If you have already made your gift to the 2024 Annual Fund, Thank you! If you have not yet made your Annual Fund gift this year, please take a moment to make your gift today!

Thank you for your generous support of TPI!

Warm wishes,

Kyra

The Executive Perspective

From James Brandt, Executive Director

Supporting Each Other Though the Presidential Election

Many of us at TPI continue to be concerned about the outcome that the recent presidential election will have on our nation. The possible repercussions for immigrants, women’s health, LGBTQ rights, and the overall wellbeing of our nation – and our world -- are in question.

To support our membership through this time of uncertainty and trauma, on the Saturday after the election, TPI offered a program to help our members reflect on how we can care for our communities, families, clients and ourselves over the coming years. The group that gathered offered support to each other in a sharing circle led by TPI members Eric Bottino and Judy Greene. When asked to share some take-aways for the TPI community, the group reminded us that this is a time to care for ourselves and each other. This is a time, they shared, to show up for each other, to refocus on self-care, to seek connection and intimacy, and to stay engaged civically and with our communities. The group discussed the importance of remembering that we don’t all experience concerns for this moment in similar ways: Young people, environmentalists, immigrants, people of color, and trans folx all have particular concerns and are in need of individual support.

On that Saturday, I appreciated the opportunity to sit in community and to share my concern and my trauma. I also felt appreciation for our TPI community and the support that the Institute has provided to so many for over a half of century. As I process through my personal and, in many cases, shared sadness, I am bolstered by the charge recently given by Vice-President Harris: “This is not a time to throw up our hands, it is a time to roll up our sleeves.”

I am grateful for the opportunity to do just that, in community at TPI.

My best,

Jim

DEI Updates

Film Screening: “Stamped from the Beginning”

On Saturday, January 11th, the DEI Committee invites all to join us for to a screening and discussion of the film “Stamped from the Beginning” based on Ibram X. Kendi’s book. An invitation will follow.

Restorative Justice: Repairing Ruptures

The DEI Committee is working to create a process for restorative justice at TPI that can offer a repair process after ruptures and interpersonal injuries occur. A group of TPI members and staff will begin training in December with a two-day workshop at RJOY (Restorative Justice for Oakland Youth) to be followed by a second workshop on conflict. We have spoken to other groups and individuals who offer RJ training to explore further training.

California State Reparations Bill

The DEI Committee discussed the importance of the Reparations Bill that is currently before the State Senate. As this bill includes reparations to address intergenerational trauma and mental health, the TPI Board has endorsed the work of the commission sponsoring the bill.
