Liberation in Psychoanalysis

Individuals engage in psychoanalysis motivated by dissatisfaction with life as they experience it. In psychoanalytic training, we spend much time preparing to understand family of origin, relationships, and developmental discontinuities. Too often, socio-cultural discontinuities do not receive significant emphasis as warranted. Dr. Myers biography is analyzed using eclectic psychoanalytic theories to demonstrate the potential to use psychoanalysis in the service of personal liberation. Mentalization and Developmental and Attachment psychoanalytic theories may be used in an emancipatory effort by those currently oppressed or marginalized in our society when trained psychoanalysts are accessible. The history of anti-Black racism is relevant to the psychoanalysis of patients regardless of race. The 'Racial Battle Fatigue' concept will be described and applied to the analysis of Dr. Myers, a person of African descent.

Course Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to describe psychoanalytic defense mechanisms underlying racism.
  • Participants will be able to compare the concepts of Racial Battle Fatigue and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder as descriptors for the experiences of minoritized individuals.
  • Participants will be able to apply Mentalization Theory to participants in psychotherapy.
